Dilworth Photography

Lately I've had several clients contact me about family photo sessions before a renovation, ironically, or maybe not, many have been in the Dilworth area of Charlotte. Historic homes have so much charm and I love how the families are choosing to keep the charm, but also upgrade to fit their growing families.

Renovating your house is an exciting experience! It is the culmination of tuning your dreams into your dream home. As exciting as it can be, it can also be overwhelming. The walls know your story, most likely they were there when you brought your babies home and have those photos hanging on them. While it can be bittersweet, there is a way to preserve your memories and ensure that your family always has a piece of the "before", commemorate the change by having a family photo session in the house before the reno. Here are just a few reasons why this is a great idea:

Preserving Memories Before a Home Renovation

  • A family photo session in your pre-reno house captures the look of the home itself. The photos will remind you of the unique features of the house, such as the warm wood floors, the cozy fireplace, or the old bookcase. You'll be able to look back on these photos and remember all the little idiosyncrasies you once forgot about.

  • A family photo session in your pre-reno house can serve as a memento of your time in that house. It's a great way to remember all the good times you had and all the memories you made. You can display these photos in your newly renovated home as a reminder of how far you have come.

  • Family photo sessions at home, especially documentary style are often a special bonding experience for families. It's a great opportunity to spend time together, laugh and take beautiful photos.

Before our session, I asked mom what she loved about their home, about their time spent at home, and what she wants to remember about it before the renovation:

“We love the coziness, that it is old and the charm that comes with its age. We love that it has been a part of our lives for so long already. On weekends, the boys wake up early and watch some TV while we wake up at a slower pace. We have breakfast (we cook a lot, and the boys try to help) and then get outside. We play in the yard and bike ride. If we are inside, the boys love building with train tracks, race cars, and legos. Our boys are the very best of friends. Tuesday is our rat terrier who has been with us for 13 years. They frequently build pillow forts in the living room. We definitely want to get pictures of the outside of our house that help commemorate what the house is today.”

I was so fortunate to have spent a morning documenting the F family in their home before it changed. I know over the last year they had a LONG wait for their home to be complete. Living somewhere else with three boys and a pup is no easy task while your home is getting renovated.
